Northern Territory & Western Australia
The NT of Australia
The Northern Territory, also locally called the NT, is a federal territory in Australia famed for its outback desert landscapes. This region is where the Red Centre lies, which holds the iconic sandstone monolith Uluru (Ayers Rock), the red-rock domes of Kata Tjuta, and the sculpted cliffs of Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park. Kakadu National Park, close to Darwin, is renowned for its Aboriginal history.
“West is Best”
When we talk about Western Australia we say “West is Best”, and it is true! Western Australia is the largest state (it covers nearly one-third of the country) and incredibly diverse. The capital city of Perth is home to a vibrant beach, food and drink scene. Make sure to visit Rottnest Island, famous for quokka’s (small marsupials) that smile all the time and love selfies. Every year between March and July, you can swim with whale sharks and manta rays on Ningaloo Reef. You can also find my favourite national park in Australia here called Karijini.

Beautiful Destinations to Find!
I want to start this part off with a notice of caution: Alice Springs is not the safest place, do not walk the streets by yourself at night. Don’t let this scare you though because there are beautiful destinations to find! You can fly into Ayers Rock Airport (close to Uluru) or to Alice Springs (approximately 4 hours driving from Uluru). You can also get here from Adelaide or Darwin if you are doing a tour/bus or plane from there. Travelling around is not as easy as the East Coast, you don’t always have phone reception and often there is nothingness for hours. However, the Red Centre must do’s are Uluru, Kings Canyon and Katja Tjuta. The most common thing to do is sleeping a swag, on an outside mattress under the stars!
Recommendations from Alice Springs & Ayers Rock Airport:
- Book your hostel or hotel for the night before and after any tour you want to book.
- Do the 3 day Red Centre tour, in which you visit Uluru, Kings Canyon and Katja Tjuta. There are camping/swag and more luxurious options. Let me know if you’re planning on flying into Uluru and we will take it from there.
- West Macdonnell Ranges: do a day trip or in an all-inclusive tour.
- You can take the Alice Springs to Darwin express in 2 days.
- Alice Springs to Darwin Tour.
- Alice Springs to Adelaide tour.

Crocodiles and Stunning Sunsets
I lived here for a couple of months and you don’t need too many days for the city itself. Crocosaurus Cove is fun if you want to swim with saltwater crocodiles in a glass cage. You can feed the little crocs with a rod if you want! Must do in winter time are Mindell sunset markets. Keep in mind that this area is in the tropics and you can see different things in the national parks close to Darwin depending on the time of year. Must do is Kakadu national park, it is in my top 3 of all of Australia. Loads of waterfalls, culture and aboriginal history.
My recommendations for Darwin:
- Kakadu/ Litchfield tours.
- Your hostel/ hotel.
- Kakadu tours.
- Litchfield tours.
- Swim with crocodiles in Crocosaurus Cove.
- Day tour to Arnhem Land must do if you are interested in Aboriginal rock art.
- Darwin to Alice Springs express (same one as above, in 2 days).
- Darwin to Alice Springs Tour.
- Darwin to Broome tour.
- Sunset dinner cruises.
- Camper/car (although keep in mind you need a 4wd for most places in Kakadu).

Pearling and the Staircase to the Moon
Stunning little city, famous for the best sunsets on Cable beach. It is also known for pearling and the Staircase to the moon. This event only happens on a full moon but it shows a stunning reflection of the moon on Cable Beach. The outdoor cinema is super old (for Australian terms) and is worth a visit. The camel rides that you can do around sunset are also worth your money.
My biggest recommendations for Broome:
- Camel sunset ride on Cable Beach.
- Cape Leveque tour.
- Broome to Darwin tour.
- Broome to Perth tour.
- Campervan/car rental (remember the 4wd though).
- Ningaloo reef whale sharks and snorkel trips (if you are in Exmouth).

- Rottnest Island.
- Wave Rock.
- Swan Valley wine tour.
- Tours to Esperance/ Cape le Grand national park.
- Perth to Exmouth or Broome tour.
- Perth to Adelaide tour.
- Campervan/car rental (4wd).
- Pinnacles and sand boarding.
- Wildlife kayaking with seals and penguins.
- Ningaloo reef whale sharks and snorkel trips (if you are in Exmouth).
